  • The ObserversPiliavin StoryboardIsabela Matos, Sofia Perez, Josue Blandon, Mederith Bolivar , Jade Fuguet, and Arianny Paulino
  • At approximately 3 am on March 13, 1964, 28-year-old Kitty Genovese was attacked in Queens, New York she was firstly stabbed 4 times in the back while her screams echoed the streets she was able to run away but the attacker caught up to her inside of an apartment's hallway were she was stabbed another 8 times and died. 38 people watched and did nothing to help.
  • After Kitty's attack an experimenter named Piliavin gathered 4 groups of Columbia University, each team consisted of 4 students 2 female observers, 1 male victim (drunk or ill), and 1 male model. 3 of the teams had white victims, while 1 of the teams had a black victim.
  • Each group ran a series of experiments from April 15 to June 26, 1968, on the 8th avenue independent Subway of New York City, during the week from 11:00 Am and 3:00 Pm. During these experiments, each group will run through a scenario involving an ill or drunk victim to see how quickly other passengers would help the victim or move out of the critical area and measure who would help by gender and race.
  • Once inside the train the victim collapses either due to excessive drinking or illness, at this time the female observers are making small talk with other passengers and recording data. The models are placed inside and outside the critical area (where the person collapses)
  • The models would either have a slow or a quick response to the victim depending on if the other passengers had helped or not. All though this was in place it was mostly unnecessary since most passengers took helping into their own hands before a model had to be used
  • Are you okay, sir?
