  • In Populonia, archaeologists unearthed a 2,500-year-old shackled skeleton, the first such burial ever discovered at an Etruscan settlement. Said settlement on founded on the coast, and the body was found in simple pit near Baratti Beach. The skeleton was identified as a 20–30-year man wearing a heavy iron collar and 5Ib iron shackles on his ankles.
  • It's theorized that the shackles were attached to rope or leather. A ring on his left hand was also unearthed and may have been connected to a chain that prevented long strides. Thus, Baratti believes the skeleton was a punished slave who labored in a local iron mine or on a ship.
  • Besides the shackled skeleton, many normal skeletons were also unearthed in the area of a 4th century necropolis. In fact, a woman's skeleton was discovered next to the shackled skeleton, and unlike his grave, hers contained several mortuary offerings which helped date the site.
