- A few days later school has started and Scout hates second grade just as much as she did first. when Jem returns to get his pants he finds that they were mended together already and hung on the fence. while walking home from school Scout and Jem find more things in the Knothole, such as gum spelling bee medal an old, broken pocket watch, etc
- Chapter 10
- For the first time in a long time its winter in Maycomb. Jem and Scout use the snow from Miss Maudie’s yard to build a snowman but they don’t have enough snow so they use mud. but with the mud, it looks like their neighbor Mr. Avery so they disguise it. Miss Maudies house catches on fire and its the first sighting of Boo Radley.
- Chapter 11
- At school, Scout gets in a fight with Cecil Jacobs because he calls Atticus a Negro lover. Then is Christmas time and Uncle Jack comes to visit and Scout curses in front of him and tells her to stop cursing then on Christmas they all travel to Finch’s Landing which is an old house in the country where Atticus's sister Alexandra lives with her husband and grandson Francis. Francis calls Atticus A negro lover and beats him up.

- A rabid dog appears by the Finch house one day and Calpurnia calls Atticus and Heck Tate the town sheriff to come help. when they arrived the sheriff asked Atticus to shoot the dog and Atticus shot it in one shot. This was exciting for Jem and Scout because they thought he was boring.
- Mrs. Dubose, an old lady who always yells at Jem and Scout as they pass by. Atticus always tell them to be polite to her because she is old but one day she says that Atticus is no better than the negros and trash he works for. and so Jem destroys her camellia bushes. As punishment he has to go and read to her, she dies a little more than a month after.
