The conflict in this story is the girls voice, trying to protect the Earth versus human kinds lack of concern for the planets survival.
The little girl begins to notice the smaller effects of societies daily practices through watching her mother and father. She attempts to speak out and warn her family, but they dismiss her ideas and beliefs as childish because everyone seems to be comfortable and carefree with their current lifestyles.
The girl is older and the effects of pollution are drastic. Everyone is scavenging and fighting over food and the little resources that are left, and hundreds of thousands of species have become extinct. She continues to try and convince her parents, but they continue to dismiss her, coming up with other excuses and explanations.
She has now graduated from the University of Oregon, majoring in environmental studies. Her parents have been diagnosed and are terminally ill with non-Hodgkin lymphoma, a result of her parent's strong passion for gardening and constant exposure to the chemicals found in the herbicides they frequently use. The Earth continues to fall apart.
Her parents are close to their last breaths. The effects have become permanent and irreversible. They finally believe her, but it's too late...
