  • In the years of 1868 and 1895, the Cuban government rebelled against the Spanish. As a result, Spain sent Valeriano Wyler to stop the rebellion. As a result in America 'Yellow Journalism' became a thing. Yellow journalism is when one exagerrates a story.

  • Due to the tension, the U.S sent the U.S.S Maine to protect Americans in Cuba. Later the U.S.S Maine exploded due to unknown reasons. However, the explosion was blamed on the Spanish and the destruction of the ship killed 250 Americans.
  • The terms of peace
  • President William McKinley was insulted in a letter by the Spanish ambassador. However, he tried to keep the U.S out of the war but when Sugar Cane plantations started to be burned, the U.S began to step in.
  • Before declaring war on Spain, the US sent a list of demands. (1) Compensation for the U.S.S Maine. (2) An end to the re-construction camps. (3) A truce in Cuba & (4) Cuban independence. Spain said no, so the Spanish-American war stated and ended quickly.
  • At the end of the war, the Treaty of Paris was signed by both countries. This treaty ended the Spanish American war for good and gave Cuba its independence.
  • After the war, Spain agreed to all of the U.S demands. Spain also agreed to give the U.S certain territories including, the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Guam. These are still U.S territories. In return, Spain received 20 million dollars to rebuild their fleets.
