Smallpox is a virus that causes headaches and high fevers soon followed by pox erupting over your face and limbs.
For years, smallpox was one of the most feared and deadly plagues of the world. This is the crazy story of how it became obsolete.
Smallpox was first seen in Egypt as early as 3,000 years ago, then China and Korea where it started it's deadly tour of the globe through trade routes and explorers.
A method of controlling it was through variolation, which was taking scabs from the pox of an infected person and rubbing it into a healthy person, often an arm. These treatments were very expensive and difficult, so often only nobles and royals were able to afford the procedure.
The idea of the smallpox vaccine came in 1796 when English doctor Edward Jenner noticed milkmaids, who had gotten cowpox, were now protected and unable to contract smallpox
To test his theory, he decided to take material from a cowpox sore on milkmaid Sarah Nelmes’ hand.
