- A hair sample is taken from the suspect.
- The sample is put in a beaker with a solvent. Any explosives in the hair sample dissolve in the solvent.
- The solution is heated.
- Paper with samples dots are put into a solvent.
- The solvent is absorbed by the paper and when it reaches the dots the chemicals race up the paper at different speeds.
- A chromatogram is created which can be used to show if there are explosives in the sample.
