We've got the power now. Ugh, the poor people never shut up.
WHY WONT YOU HELP US!?!
What are you doing?!
The people have spoken! I will lead them by myself
From 2000 B.C.E. to 800 B.C.E. city-states in Greece were ruled by one king at a time. The monarchy was passed down from father to son meaning that citizens had no opinion in choosing a who their King should be. The king made all of the decisions but they also had councils of advisors to help him make descisions.
Eventually, the king's group of advisors decided that they should have more power than the King, realizing the strength in numbers. They overthrew the king and took over. This was called oligarchy. They were groups of aristocratic families that came together to make the decisions. They had money and did not care about the lives of the poor, so once again the citizens still suffered.
Later on, the oligarchy became ruled over by an aristocratic Tyrant. He promised the people a better life and the people supported him to take power by force. But these Tyrants did nothing to help the people and simply worked hard at ensuring that nobody would overthrow their power.
