- Stalins biggest rival was Leon Trotsky who many believed to be more intellectual than Stalin. Stalin got around this by gaining support for himself within the party.Ultimately, Stalin's idea of a lone socialist nation was preferred.
- The Great Purge
- The USSR was behind the West and was in a poor state, a lack of grain called for change. Stalin blamed this on the Kulaks who he deemed as hoarders of grain and arrested Kulaks. He created squads to regularly steal grain.
- Joseph Stalin claimed to be building the Utopia Karl Marx wanted. Removing capitalism and giving workers equal share. However, workers received very little. His policies only kept him in power
- Stalin believed that Bolsheviks were a threat to his rule. He began to kill and imprison people of his own party. The Purge reached anyone, even high rank officers. Anyone Stalin believed was against him he showed no mercy.
