- Hi! My name is Jo Ellen. I am 17 years old and I have cancer, more specifically, Hodgkin's lymphoma. It all started when I noticed I was really tired and my lymph nodes were swollen.
- I went to the doctor after a couple of weeks because I still felt pretty bad. I had lymphocyte tests done to see why I was so sick when doctors found some concerning cells that they said were cancerous. After further tests, it was revealed I had Hodgkin's lymphoma.
- I was devastated! I did not want to even think about cancer, much less have it in my body. I went to see a therapist about my feelings. This helped me manage the stress and anxiety I was feeling about this.
- Now, I take rounds of chemotherapy in the form of a pill every few weeks, to allow my body to recover in between treatments. It makes me really tired and nauseous most of the time.
- I have to be careful around others because I can get sick very easily since I don't have many healthy white blood cells, making my immunity to different viruses very low.
- I have to go to the doctor pretty regularly to check my progress and to ensure that I'm not getting sicker.
