- How long have you been in Canada?
- 6 years, I've been living here since grade 8.
- Wow that's such a long time. You must know your way around.
- Haha , since I went to high school here I know Canada's history pretty well.
- Yeah I went to high school with you, Hannah. I know that stuff too. Tell me more about your hometown's history.
- Is there anything exciting besides the Vietnam War that everyone knows about?
- I didn't go to high school in Vietnam so I didn't learn much about it...
- Isn't it kind of sad that you know someone else's culture better than your own?
- I'm sorry but...
- No, Jessie. You have a point.
- In the last 6 years, I have been living someone else culture and forgetting my own. Sometimes, I feel like I'm not Canadian but also no longer Vietnamese. I don't even know who I truly am anymore.
- Learning more about a new culture is fun but don't forget your own culture is essential too. Acknowledge the history and the culture you've grown up with helps you identify your own identity and build a sense of pride in who you truly are. I have been living in Canada for so long that the Viet culture in me is neglected. My goal is to understand more about my own culture .
