  • 3-6 years children learn five new words every day. They can use 2-3 word sentences and start to be more descriptive.They will use fast-mapping to build vocabulary by connecting new words to similar concepts.
  • By age 2 sentence structure begins to improve. They comprehend what they hear but cannot grammatically form complex sentences.
  • By age 5 children are able to understand word order and sentence structure. How children understand grammar is still uncertain.
  • Children need to understand the importance of taking turns and staying on topic when having conversations. From birth to 12 months of age, children will pay attention to body language and make eye contact, while coo-ing or babbling. From 1-2 years old children will talk to themselves, toys and others. By ages 2-4, children are skilled in conversation and understand to take turns and adapt to social expectations.
