  • In 1789, the King Louis XVI called a meeting of the Estates General. He called the meeting because the French government was having financial problems. The Thrid Estate developed a plan to fix the problems by taxing the other two estates, because they didn't pay taxes.

  • On 20 June 1789, the members of the French Third Estate, who had begun to call themselves the National Assembly, took the Tennis Court Oath, vowing "not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established".
