there were many events that led to the formation of the united states constitution
The first steps towards independence came when nine of the colonies drafted the Stamp Act Congress. This was the first step towards a unified nation. The colonists didnt want to be ruled by the British any longer.
On July 4, 1776, the colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. But the new country was lacking unity and laws. The first attempt at a constitution was the Articles of Confederation. It became ratified by Virginia in 1777. This was criticized by the citizens because the federal government was weak and there wasn't unity between the states.
The Framers decided to get together in 1787 to start drafting a new Constitution. It would specify what separate laws would be granted to the state and Federal Government.
The U.S. Constitution took effect on March 4,1789. This gave us our three branches of government. It made a system of checks and balances to prevent any branch of government from getting too much power
The Bill of Rights was also adopted into the U.S. Constitution. It has ten amendments that protect the basic rights of American citizens.
