  • Hi there! I'm Doctor Katie, and I'm a veterinarian at Best Friends Veterinary Clinic. Today I'm going to talk to you about Lyme Disease.
  • Lyme disease is a bacterial infection caused by the spread of the bacteria Borrelia Burgdorferi this is transmitted when ticks jump from host to host.
  • Lyme disease is a spirochetes bacteria travels through the bloodstream after being transmitted by a tick bite
  • The life cycle of Lyme disease begins very early on and then continues to develop
  • Some symptoms may include fever, fatigue, headache, and a rash known as erythema migrans. If gone untreated for some time it can lead to joint pain, heart problems, and neurological problems, as well as cause the erythema migrans to spread
  • Lucky for us, there are treatments for Lyme disease! one such treatment is putting the patient on antibiotics for a few weeks to kill the bacteria
  • Lyme diseases is diagnosed with a two step blood test. If the first test is negative, no further testing is needed. But if it is positive, or indeterminate, the second test is required to determine the results.
  • Lyme diseases is transmitted through tick bites when they hop from host to host
  • Ways to protect yourself and your pets is to cover up, use bug repellent, and remove them with tweezers a soon as they are seen
  • In vet school, I found it interesting how Lyme disease can affect the whole body, instead of just the source of the bite
  • Lyme disease can be scary, but going to your local vet to get your pet tested and treated can make the experience much more comfortable for both you and your best friend!
