  • O treachery! Fly, good Fleance, fly, fly, fly! Thou may ’st revenge—O slave!
  • Banquo contemplates Macbeth's coronation and the witches' prophecy, suspecting that he likely murdered the king. Macbeth and Lady Macbeth soon enter, and the former asks Banquo if he will be ride that afternoon. While he asks under the gauge of inviting Banquo to a banquet, Macbeth secretly wants to know his friend's location so that he can kill him. When everyone else leaves, Macbeth, worried that Banquo's sons will overthrow him, manipulates two men to murder Banquo and his son that evening.
  • Scene 4
  • Gentlemen, rise. His highness is not well.
  • Lady Macbeth, worried about her husband, summons him to her. Both are unhappy: Lady Macbeth, despite achieving the power she once so greatly desired, is still discontent, and Macbeth continues to stress about Banquo's knowledge of the prophecies. As he continues to resort to murder and violence, he becomes more paranoid and anxious. Whereas he once told his wife everything, Macbeth now refuses to divulge information about his plot to kill Banquo.
  • Scene 5
  • He shall spurn fate, scorn death, and bear. His hopes 'bove wisdom, grace, and fear. And you all know, security Is mortals' chiefest enemy.
  • The two murderers that Macbeth talked to in Scene 1 are joined by a third. Banquo and Fleance light a torch and approach the hidden men. The murderers attack them, but Banquo sacrifices himself so his son would live, urging Fleance to run and avenge him. One of the murderers extinguish the torch, and like the fire, Banquo is now dead as darkness reigns.
  • Scene 6
  • Some holy angel, Fly to the court of England and unfold His message ere he come, that a swift blessingMay soon return to this our suffering country Under a hand accursed!
  • Macbeth and Lady Macbeth welcome their dinner guests, and the former steps aside to meet with one of the murderers. He finds out that while Banquo was dead, Fleance escaped. Macbeth returns to the banquet, but finds a ghost of Banquo sitting in his chair. Outraged and paranoid, he starts talking to the ghost, letting his anxieties get the best of him. Lady Macbeth makes excuses for her husband and lies that he has had these visions since birth. She then urges Macbeth to snap out of his trance. The ghost disappears, allowing Macbeth to apologize to his guests, but Banquo soon reappears, prompting Macbeth's outbursts again. Lady Macbeth soon excuse their guests, and the ghost too disappears. Macbeth reveals to his wife that he is worried about Macduff and that he'll visit the witches again tomorrow to get answers.
  • Sit, worthy friends. My lord is often thusAnd hath been from his youth. Pray you, keep seat.
  • Thou canst not say I did it. Never shakeThy gory locks at me.
  • Hecate scolds the three witches for meddling with Macbeth without consulting her, condemning the man as an arrogant and selfish spoiled brat. She declares that she will take over the situation and that they will meet with Macbeth tomorrow to give him false hope and overconfidence, which will ultimately be his downfall.
  • Lennox walks with another lord, discussing Macbeth's suspicious actions. They reveal that Banquo's death has been blamed on his son, but both men suspect Macbeth for both murders. Macduff has fled to England to help Malcolm petition the King of England to overthrow Macbeth, who knows this and is preparing for war. Lennox and the lord hope that the two men are successful in overthrowing the "tyrant," desperately wanting order to be restored to their once-great country.
