  • Make a golden crown, shaped like a laurel wreath, worthy of the gods!
  • I will do as you wish, my king!
  • Hmmmm
  • Did you mean that the gold smith cheated?
  • Hey, I heard that the crown is not really gold!
  • After a great battle in 265 BCE, Hiero, a young general, led the Syracusans to victory against Carthage, and the people of Syracuse chose Hiero to be their king.
  • Find out if this crown is really pure gold. You must report to me before the ceremony.
  • Hiero,to show his gratitude to the gods for his success, he decided to place in a certain temple, a crown made of pure gold that is shaped like a laurel wreath in their honour. Hiero appointed a goldsmith and told him to fashion out of the gold a wreath for the gods.
  • Is this the solution … ?
  • The goldsmith made the crown and Hiero made preparations for the ceremony to place the wreath in the temple that he had chosen. But a day before the ceremony, the king heard rumors that the goldsmith cheated and it was not pure gold.
  • Eureka! Eureka!*
  • Hiero went to his cousin, Archimedes, who was already renowned for his work in mathematics, mechanics and physics. Thinking how to solve the king’s problem, Archimedes walked to the public baths for his daily bath.
  • As he lowered himself into the water, the water in the tub began to spill out. Curious, Archimedes lowered himself slowly into the water, and noticed that the more he sank into the water, the more water spilled out.
  • Archimedes was so excited that he jumped out of the tub and ran all the way home without his clothes on, shouting -
  • * I have found it
