  • Don't you agree Poe's Ligeia has the greatest ending of any short story?
  • Actually, I disagree. I think the revelation at the end of Guy de Maupassant's The Necklace is packed with such social commentary, that it is the best conclusion to a story.
  • Yes, you see, Poe was writing in the Romantic era with a heavy use of the Gothic genre, meaning a lot of his work, Ligeia included, is very visual, entertaining and artsy. Whether or not Ligeia actually came back or is just a figment of the narrator's imagination is a great ending.
  • Once we get to the era of Realism, authors such as deMaupassant start using literature as a means of social commentary. In the case of the necklace, the dramatic ending of the item she ruined her life for, being a fake.
  • I understand your argument, but I find the mystery of the gothic far more compelling and timeless than opinions much more relvevant in the context of the time
  • That is fair enough, literature is made for debate. If everyone had the same opinions, it wouldn't be very interesting.
