Before the Tulsa race massacre, greenwood was a community of necessity, it was a community of necessity because it was the only place to do business. They had somewhere they dint get judged because there were with people in their own race. They thought they were finally somewhere where they felt safe.
After the Tulsa race massacre, greenwood was devastated they lost everything they worked for ( some even lost their family members ). It was a devastating day for the community, They tried to access the justice system and problems with fire insurance but it was no use.
Lawyers offered legal assistance to African Americans jailed in the riots and helped them sue the city for compensation. A massive reconstruction of the district was completed in 1922, only one year after the riot, and without the help of the greater Tulsa community.
