At first, I lied once. I accidentally broke my mother's favorite vase when I tripped on the table leg. I heard my mother's footsteps nearing the door and saw my younger sister passing. When she arrived, I blamed my younger sister for breaking the vase and my mother grounded her. I didn't think much about it.
Stage 2: Blaming Others
Then, my small lies began to pile up and became greater. However, I didn't put too much thought about it as it wasn't really hurting anyone. I just twisted some words, I wasn't really lying to anyone. Everyone was still happy, and so I got lost in my twisted lies so deep that I soon failed to see the truth.
Stage 3: Gossiping
One day, my classmate Micaela asked me to stay behind after class. I honestly didn't want to, but I was curious about what she wanted to tell me. I listened to what she had to say. She asked if I had problems personally, family issues, or any of the kind. I was surprised and denied her question. Suddenly, a light shone brightly and engulfed the room.
Stage 4: Neglection
I don't remember what happened or where the light came from. But when I came to, I saw my sister crying. I heard the voice of Micaela telling me that this was what happened to my sister the day I blamed her for breaking the vase. She became the target of blame and she trusted me less. I didn't know she cried that day, but I felt a pang in my chest.
Before I could ask Micaela what was going on, a different scene flashed before my eyes. It was the day I told my best friend Lily false rumors about our classmate Jessica. I told her that Jessica didn't have any friends because she was an outcast. I didn't know she was listening. I felt bad after seeing her reaction. She was actually kind to everyone.
Then, I saw my brother crying on the floor. Without realizing I wasn't actually present in the real scene, I rushed forward but was stopped by a force. Why was he crying? Did he trip over? He was smiling in our selfie earlier.. Then again, I didn't pay attention because I left after posting the selfie. Micaela told me that he wanted my attention but I was too glued to my phone and social media.
