- Arthur prepares for the travel and is about to depart from Chicago
- Climax
- Arthur experiences the first of his problems in his plan. He finds a failed settlement out in the Illinois countryside. He decided to get some rest and sleeps in the old sheriff's office that had part of the roof caved in. Thinking that he would awake to sunshine, Arthur slept right under the part where the hole is from when some of the roof fell. Soon after, Arthur meets his new dog, Otto who happens to walk into the Sherrif's office.
- Falling action
- Arthur finishes the homestead and the rest of the problems start to show. Like the fact that Arthur believes that hunting is wrong. So, he fishes for most of his food. Arthur doesn't realize that fishing won't last the whole winter.
- Resolution
- Frontier Hotel
- Arthur begins to starve and has completely run out of food. He decides that he needs to go against his word and go hunting.
- Arthurs old habit of watching animals pass by distracts him for a second but he returns to what he needed to do and successfully hunts a deer.
- Later on, when Arthur returns to the journal for a final time, he describes how he founded a hotel for travelers that are moving into the west. He wanted people to move into their new homes
