  • So Carrie spent 9 years travelling around the world. But she didn't stop in her suffrage work; she continued to promote equal suffrage rights for women worldwide.
  • VOTES FOR WOMEN IN ENGLAND
  • In 1915, she returned to the USA and resumed presidency of the NAWSA. It had become badly divided over campaigning strategies.
  • In 1916, Carrie proposed her "Winning Plan". This campaign focused on winning the vote in at least 36 states so that a federal amendment could be passed.
  • We must focus on winning the vote in individual states before we can get a federal amendment.

  • Carrie played an important role in many key states. She united the multiple suffrage groups in New York, making them stronger, which greatly contributed to NY's suffrage victory in 1917.
  • NY PASSES WOMEN'S SUFFRAGE BILL
  • Finally on August 26, 1920, Carrie's hard work paid off. The 19th amendment was ratified by only 1 vote, allowing women to vote.
