Yusof Ishak's family moved to Singapore when he was still young.Before that,he lived in Padang Gajah. He studied in Raffles Institution.

Yusof Ishak went from door to door to ask for donations to start the Utusan Melayu newspaper.He explained to the Malays that they needed a reliable newspaper of their own to voice their concerns.
He worked for Singapore's freedom,wanting Singapore to be respected by other larger countries,and believed in racial harmony and equality.
Yusof Ishak died on 23 November 1970.Many people paid their respects during his funeral at City Hall. He was truly an inspirational leader during his almost 11 years of service.We will never forget our first president,Yusof Ishak.
