  • "First off, what is National Reconciliation Week? National Reconciliation Week is a campaign run by Reconciliation Australia, and it is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia."

  • This year’s theme is “More than a word. Reconciliation takes action.” (some fancy edit) Reconciliation is defined as the restoration of friendly relations. True understanding of the idea of reconciliation will help us all, as a community, move forward and gain reconciliation.

  • Our Indigenous people have been driven apart from the white Australian society ever since the arrival of British settlers who declared the land to be terra nullius, belonging to no one. Aboriginal people were moved off their traditional land and killed in battles or by hunting parties. 
  • European diseases (measles, tuberculosis, etc.) killed many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Aboriginal people’s rights were also sorely disregarded, and they weren’t even a part of the Australian Constitution. 
  • Their rights to vote, marry whomever they wanted to and move wherever they chose, own land, be the legal guardian of their children, receive the same pay and drink alcohol were controlled by the state governments.
