Around the year 1,000, the celebrated doctor Al Zahraw ipublished a 1,500 page illustrated encyclopedia of surgery that was used in Europe as a medical reference for the next 500 years.
Surgery in the Middle Ages were painful! Surgeons had a very poor understanding of human anatomy, anesthetics and antiseptic techniques to keep wounds and incisions from infection.
Surgery in the Middle Ages was really only used in life and death circumstances. One reason is that there was no reliable anesthetic to dull the excruciating pain caused by the rough cutting and procedures.
