I hereby declare Luther a heretic and Excommunicate him from the ChurchHis Majesty the Pope
Luther is officially excommunicated. Burn his writings.
The Pope wrote a bull Excommunicating Luther while Luther was receiving writings from the Hussites and Lorenzo Valla. These writing convinced Luther that the Pope was the anti-Christ.
I will give him a safe passage no matter what the Pope says
The emperor better do as I want and condemn him a heretic.
On June 15, 1520 Pope Leo excommunicated Luther officially and demanded that all his books be burned and the publication of the bull written previously was barely able to be published in Germany because of sabotage.
I need evidence from the Bible to recant.
I will kill him. He will die
Luther wrote many small books and pamphlets and the German people listened eagerly to Luther's every word. So Luther wrote and published the three great Reformation treatises to cushion the shock of the Papal Bull.
He would die anyway.
The Pope wanted the Emperor to claim Luther a heretic and kill him as a puppet king would do. Except for a moment the Emperor sided with Luther against a foreign Pope.
Luther again appeared before the Diet and announced that he needed evidence from the Bible before he could recant.
Luther left the Diet and on the journey home he was captured by his friends for safekeeping before the Emperor killed him when his safe passage was over.
