  • Wars began in Ionian on the west coast of Anatolia and the Ionians decided to revolt against King Darius and Persia. Athens agreed to help and support the revolt which makes King Darius angry and vows to destroy Athens in revenge.

  • The Athens were outnumbered, but they managed to defeat the Persians because the Persians wore light armor and lacked training in land combat. The Persians had lost a lot of men. Pheidippides ran 26 miles from marathon to Athens to declare victory, but on the way, he died from a heart attack.
  • Battle of Plataea479 BCE
  • Darius dies while assembling force to defeat the Greeks and his son Xerxes took over, putting together army to attack Sparta. Xerxes army came to the narrow mountains pass in Thermopylae. Greeks including Spartans blocked the way, but Persian were to powerful, so Spartan stayed to hold them, while the other Greeks forces to retreat.
  • Effect of the War
  • The battle of Salamis was the battle where they fought at sea with ships. Xerxes sets fire the Athens then send warships to block both ends of the narrow canal that the Athenians has positioned themselves in. But the Greeks ships were armed with battering arms. The Greeks defeated the Persian as the Persian fleet off.
  • Battle of Plataea was the final land battle between the Persian and Greece. This was the second time that the Persian invaded Greece. It took place near the city of Plataea and the Greeks won the war.
  • The effect of the was causes the city state feeling free and confident. To defend the Persians, Athens formed the Delian League, making the city-state the most powerful in Greece.
