- Henry II and Thomas Becket were great friends.Henry was made king and Thomas was his chancellor.
- Henry didn't like that the church had its own laws.

- When the Archbishop of Canterbury died in 1161. Henry made Becket the new Archbishop in hope that he would change the laws.
- He didn't, Becket felt that the church was above the law.
- Henry was angry at his friend
- Four knights went and killed Thomas when he was praying on 29th December 1170
