  • Chapter 1: The Ghettos
  • "Then came the ghettos."page 11
  • Chapter 2: The Train Ride
  • "Someone near the window read to us: 'Auschwitz.' Nobody had ever heard that name." page 27
  • During Hitlers dictatorship, he ordered a genocide that killed millions of Jews and minorities.
  • Chapter 3: Introduction to the Camp
  • "Ahead of you is a long road paved with suffering. Don't lose hope." Page 41
  • Elie Wiesel and his family were Jews who lived during this time, and when Hitlers ruling started they were forced to move into towns called ghettos. They forced to follow harsh rules.
  • Chapter 4: Life in the Camps.
  • "He threw himself on me like a wild beast, beating me in the chest, on my head, throwing me to the ground and picking me up again, crushing me with ever more violent blow, until I was covered in blood." page 53
  • The Jews were forced to move from the ghettos into concentration camps. They were packed onto a train and taken to Auschwitz. 
  • Chapter 5: Insult to Injury.
  • "Your leg was not amputated. You'll see, in two weeks, you'll be walking around like everybody else."
  • After having his family split up by S.S. soldiers, Elie and his father find out the harsh reality of the concentration camps.
  • One day a worker at the camp became angry and took his anger out on Elie. Beating him violently even though he was innocent.
  • Working every day in harsh conditions causes Elie to get injured. After being scheduled for surgery, the camp has to evacuate because of war. Elie chooses to evacuate with his father instead of staying to get treatment.
