  • The causes of the Haitian Revolution were slavery and the fact that any person of color was subject to legal discrimination. With the French Revolution's inspiration, they decided to revolt against the white minority and start a fight for equal rights.

  • Toussaint L'ouverture was a main leader in the Haitian Revolution who fought against slavery and unequal rights of citizens of color. Despite this, L'ouverature was highly disliked by the population as he supported the plantations and thought those who were enslaved should still work at them, but for pay instead of being owned by them.

  • In August of 1791, a slave revolt broke out in Haiti and slaves rose up against their masters, mostly Grand Blancs, and fought for their independence.
  • Outcomes
  • After Napoleon sent his brother Leclerc to Haiti, former slaves overtook his army. They were against the reinstation of slavery and the final straw was when they tried to take away their weapons.
  • The Declaration of Rights of Man and Citizens was important to the Haitian Revolution as it inspired the slaves by giving them hope for rights or themselves.
  • Slavery was outlawed in Haiti and it became a nation independent from France.
