- “Here is the map of the world. You can use different tools to locate different places such as mountain ranges, natural features, oceans, man made boundaries, longitude, latitude, and hemispheres just like geographers did.”
- “Can you tell us more about hemispheres, Mrs. Demi?”
- “Of course! The United States is located in 2 hemispheres. Every place on Earth is in 2 hemispheres. Each hemisphere has several land masses called continents. There are 7 continents in total such as Africa, Antarctica, Australia, Asia, Europe, North America, and South America. They take up 30% of Earth’s surface.”
- “The United States is a nation. A nation is an area of land defined by political boundaries. The United States has 50 states in total. Let's take a closer look.”
- “The United States has 48 states that are contiguous and 2 states that are non-contiguous. We have 5 Great Lakes such as Lake Superior, Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Ontario. Our nation's capital is Washington D.C. which stands for District of Columbia. Each state has its own capital.”
- “I can! We have 21 military bases in Florida. Military bases have their own schools, grocery stores, and hospitals to serve the people who live on the base.”
- “We have about 700 military bases in the U.S. Can anyone tell me how many we have here in Florida?”
