- "The ones holding up the those greek temples with their heads. I was looking at a picture of some the other day, thinking, those women have the second toughest job in the world" (Pg.208)

- Hospital Scene- Rex believes in natural medicine. Lori was stung by a scorpion and Rex took her to a Navajo witch doctor. The witch doctor put a brown paste making Lori a brand new person. "Dad left home as soon as he could"(pg.148) " Dad had taken to disappearing for days at a time"(pg.171) "
- Brian
- Rosemary became very lazy as the children grew up and started helping out around the house. She was suppose to start teaching one and was so depressed she told Jeanette she had to start providing for the family. "Mom rarely got angry. She was usually either singing or crying, but now her face twisted with fury" (pg.219)

- "Lori had always made very good posters, for football rallies, for the plays the drama club put on "She wasn't very athletic and didn't like exploring as much as Brian and I did, but she loved anything having to do with pencil and paper.
- Maureen
- "When Mom told me I was so focused it was scary, I know she didn't mean it as a compliment, but I took it that way."
