Since the government, corrupted and inefficient, weren't doing a good job by not providing enough for citizens, zemstvos, local organizations, started to take responsibilities for civilians.(Medical care).

The whole revolution was set on fire mainly with a guy - Tsar Nicholas II. Mind it's the second, since Nicholas I...wasn't as bad as him (not saying he's good though).
Nicholas abdicated his thrown and provisional government stepped in.

Joseph Stalin became the military leader for the civil wars. Trotsky unleashed the red terror using his intelligence. Later, Trotsky built the loyal red army and secret police called Chekha targeted their opponents.

After the war, till 1923, Stalin served as commissar in the Bolshevik government. After Lenin died in 1924, Stalin wanted power while Trotsky didn't agree with him, so Stalin hired someone to kill Trotsky.
