  • The Pedestrian is a short story by Ray Bradbury.
  •
  • Leonard Mead is a resident of a city in 2053. He enjoys walking alone in the streets at night, and as he walks down the empty streets, he passes the homes of other residents who are inside watching TV.
  •
  • He describes them as if they are dead (‘grey phantoms’, who live in ‘tombs’).He recounts that everyone inside is almost ‘hypnotised’ by the TV.
  •
  • One night he meets a robotic police car, the only one left in the city as crime is virtually non-existant.
  •
  • The car attempts to interrogate Mead as to why he is out by himself at night, walking suspiciously around the street. He tries to describe that he is unmarried, lives alone, and doesn’t have a TV, hence why he walks around the streets at night.
  •
  • Without any explanation, the car instructs Mead to get in the car and they drive away to an unknown destination.
