  • Of course, the propaganda poster is made to make you feel a certain way about the war. There is a big difference in the world views between the United States and Soviet Union.
  • Yes, the difference is the United States world view was the belief in democratic political institutions, individual freedoms, and free market economic systems. However, the Soviet Union believed in totalitarian government and socialist government controlled economic systems.
  • Oh really? Can you elaborate on that difference?
  • Someone just showed me a propaganda poster of the Cold War. The poster said "Is this Tomorrow?" I don't know how to feel about it, can you explain the message behind it to me?
  • I'm so glad you asked! The nuclear arms race was a competition between the United States and Soviet Union in nuclear weapons. For example, The United States was the first country to create an atomic weapon, and for a time this made it the most powerful country in the world. The American atomic advantage did not last long. Just four years later, in 1949, the Soviet Union built and tested its first atomic bomb.
  • The role of spies during the Cold War was spies had stolen technical secrets about building an atomic bomb and passed them along to the Soviet Union, helping the Soviets develop a bomb more quickly. Some famous spy trials include Julius and Ethel Rosenberg.
  • Wow! This sounds like a very competitive and interesting war. Tell me more about it!
  • Thank you for explaining the difference, however, what is the nuclear arms race and the role of spies?
  • Okay, have you ever heard about Senator McCarthy?
  • Senator McCarthy capitalized on American fears of communism that were further stirred up by the Soviet Union testing a nuclear bomb and China becoming a communist country. n the 1950s, McCarthy recklessly accused many American government officials and citizens of being communists, based on little or no evidence. Because of the prevailing fear of communism at the time, his accusations drew the attention of the press. Therefore, I guess that propaganda poster you saw was made to scare Americans like Senator McCarthy did.
  • Oh wow that's terrible how he played with people's emotions.
  • No, I haven't. Who is he and why is he important ?
  • Well, as a result of everyone becoming concerned over the Soviet Union's military, the United States adopted a policy called “massive retaliation." The United States enacted massive retaliation to prevent a nuclear attack. Through this strategy, the United States warned the Soviet Union that it would not hesitate to retaliate with a massive nuclear attack.
  • Oh my, things are heating up in this war!
  • What occurred after that?
  • That is an amazing question! You know how schools hold regular fire drills?
  • Well during the 1950's and 1960's, schools practiced nuclear attack drills. Families also had fallout shelters in their homes that needed to keep them stocked with supplies. These aspects applied to American home life.
  • Additionally, the Cold War affected Virginia due to the location of several naval and air bases, therefore, as the federal government increased military spending, Virginia's economy benefited more than any other state, and an influx in monetary resources and personnel provided a boom to Virginia's economy.
  • We've been talking about the Cold War a lot, so what are some impacts of the Cold War to American and Virginian life?
  • Yes
  • Of course, it is no problem!
  • Thank you for helping me learn all the aspects of the Cold War!
