Napoleon(pictured left) was defeated by Alexander I of Russia (pictured right) in 1815, which established Russia as a significant power and also marked the end of one of the most powerful military leaders alive. This led to a sense of Russian Nationalism.

Russia lost the Crimean War, which lasted from 1853-1856, to Britain, France, and the Ottoman Empire, and this resulted in a treaty beign signed that forbade Russia from basing warships in the Black Sea, weakening them significantly.

Jewish people in Russia were forced to convert to Russian Orthodoxy, and being Jewish was considered a crime. Repressive leaders wanted all of Russia to be under one universal religion, and this conversion made more of the Russian populace similar and "red"

As industrialization gained traction in 1890, new revolutionary movements began to develop in Russia, including the Bolsheviks, who supported Lenin, and wanted him to gain power over the country. The Bolshevik party was exceedingly radical and cruel, which helped them to gain power faster.
March 8, 1917, the Bolshevik Revolution occurs, and the peasants/working class rise up against Tsar Nicholas II in order to secure more power and rights for themselves, and also to get Lenin into power over Russia, and they succeed.
December 30, 1922, the Soviet Union is formed, and Russia truly becomes "red", as the communist part is in power, the Bolsheviks have attained great influence over the country as a whole. Vladimir Lenin is now in power and the first Soviet leader.
