Storyboard Text

  • The Earth formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago.The early atmosphere was most likely created by gases emitted by volcanoes. For the first billion years of the Earth's history, it is thought that there was a lot of volcanic activity.
  • The balanced symbol equation for photosynthesis is 6CO2 + 6H20 + (energy) → C6H12O6 + 6O2
  • It's likely that the early atmosphere consisted entirely of carbon dioxide, with little to no oxygen.Water vapour, ammonia, and methane had smaller proportions.
  • When the Earth cooled, the majority of the water vapour was released and dissolved, creating the seas and oceans. Water began to dissolve ammonia, resulting in Amonia compounds and Nitrogen-containing substances. Since nitrogen is so inert, it was most likely contained in the atmosphere.
  • Since carbon dioxide was used for photosynthesis by plants and algae, it dissolved in the oceans and created fossil fuels, the amount of carbon dioxide in the Earth's early atmosphere decreased. Oxygen levels increased because it was released from the plants and into the atmosphere.
  • Animals started evolving from the plants and algae, because oxygen was being released by the plants and the animals were releasing carbon dioxide for the plants so that the process of photosynthesis can continue. The ozone layer blocked lots of UV rays so that plants and animals could form.
  • Now, 78% of the Earth's atmosphere is nitrogen, 21% is oxygen, 0.9% is argon, 0.04% is carbon dioxide, leaving the other 0.06% methane and water vapour. Today pollution is causing carbon dioxide levels to rise.
