  • During the late 17th century, French explorers, missionaries and fur traders arrived in Chicago and they interacted with the Potawatomi Native Americans.
  • In 1779, the first permanent settlement was built in Chicago by the Chicago River.
  • After the Northwest Indian War, in 1795, Americans decided to use Chicago as a US military base in the Treaty of Greenville.
  • In 1803, Fort Dearborn was built by the Chicago River, however, was burned dow n by Indian forces in the 1812, Battle of Fort Dearborn. Lots of the citizens were either killed or made prisoners,
  • In 1829, Chicago had a population of less than 100.
  • In the 1830s, the Yankee entrepreneurs used the area as a transportation hub.
