Religion was an important part of life for enslaved people, but they struggled to maintain their faith and traditions. Colonial laws often prohibited the practice of religions other than Christianity. Some enslaved Africans were Muslims, but most followed traditional African religions that honored ancestors along with many gods.
At the same time, most enslaved people, particularly those from Africa, converted to Christianity under the forceful influence of their enslavers. Enslavers often used Bible passages to justify enslavement. Preachers prepared sermons for enslaved people on the virtues of obedience in an effort to prevent rebellion on plantations.
