"But something makes me hesitate and take a few steps closer to her.... That something might be a lot of different somethings, but either way, my feet carve through the gravelly sand, weaving in between the sharp rocks until I'm just a couple of steps behind her" (35).

After leaving her house to go for a walk, Grace finds Eva crying on the beach due to having just lost her mother a couple of weeks earlier. The two become fast friends after sharing a couple of jokes.
"It's the middle of the night, I've just left my mother in a hotel room in Portland, and now I'm sitting in my ex-boyfriend's car, staring at the darkened windows of Macon's old room and wondering if my girlfriend is still my girlfriend" (305).
"I look down at the necklace. It's not a lot.... But it's something.... Maybe it'll all go to shit again again. Maybe real healing for Mom and me will take a few rounds of falling apart and coming back together. I don't know. Time will tell, I guess" (324).
Grace's mother, Maggie, steals money from her current boyfriend to buy decorations for a surprise party for Eva on her birthday. This leads to them getting in an argument and Maggie eventually forces Grace to pack her things so they could leave.
Grace finally gathers up the courage to confront her mother about how she really feels. After realizing that her mother never planned to follow through with helping Grace achieve her dream and letting her lead a normal life, she leaves her mother alone in a hotel in Portland.
Jay, Grace's ex-boyfriend and Maggie's ex-boyfriend's son, comes to pick Grace up after she walks out on her mother. He takes her to her best friend's house who has offered to let Grace live with them before.
Just before she leaves to go to a piano audition in New York City, a truck comes along with a package from Grace's mom. It holds a necklace that was promised to Grace years before. The package was sent from a health institute, which was one of Grace's wishes for her mother: to get help.
