  • Erikson's first stage of psychological development describes a time where an infant is trying to figure out trust and mistrust. For example here, Derek learns to trust his mother as she comes to console him when he cries.

  • Erikson's second stage of psychological development describes a time where a child either starts becoming independent and doing thing himself or doubts himself. For example here, Derek chooses his outfit himself.

  • Erikson's third stage of psychological development describes a time where a child either begins to initiate tasks themselves and learn of their effect on the environment or feel guilty. For example here, Derek is both initiating a game of soccer with his friends and the others are making efforts to complete the task.
  • Erikson's fourth stage of psychological development describes a time where a child either learns to apply themselves to tasks and feel the pressure of doing so or starts to feel inferior. For example here, Derek finds it difficult to learn how to play the violin, but he is not giving up. 
  • Erikson's fifth stage of psychological development describes a time where a teenager either tries to learn more about themselves, and their identity or become confused. For example here, Derek learns that he wants to become a surgeon because he experiences something that pushes him to that direction.
