- "My name is Amina, and me and my daughter are Syrian refugees. When the war broke out we sold our house in Damascus and are now in Lebanon. We are hopeful that we will be able to reach the safety of Europe soon. Right now, we can either choose to go through Turkey or Egypt. "
- "We decided to fly to Istanbul, Turkey, because it was easier to get to and has better living conditions. The plane tickets cost us quite a bit though. A smuggler is now offering us an initial 3,000 dollars each to take us to Greece. We can either pay the deposit and hope he will keep his word, or refuse."
- "I refused to pay the deposit as money is tight and smugglers aren't always trustworthy. Now a reputable middle man is involved, to give the smuggler the payment after arrival in Greece. I now must decide whether my daughter and I will pay $7,500 each to travel by land, or $5,000 per person to travel by sea."
- "I decided that we would travel by sea, as it is less costly and there is a lower chance of us getting caught. However, the boat's engine has just broken, and the driver only has enough battery on his phone for one call! Should we ask him to call the coastguards or the smuggler?"
- "We called the Coastguards because we hoped they would be better equipped to help us, and more likely to actually turn up. However they never did- instead the Turkish coastguards found us, and brought us all back to Turkey."

- "We are now stuck in a refugee camp in Turkey. Europe was in our reach and I am so disappointed we couldn't make it there. However, I am grateful me and my daughter are safe, and I really hope that we will still be able to get to Europe one day. "
