- In Perplau's theory, the first of the four sequential phases is Orientation this part of the phases , there is still some reservations in the client's part, since both of them are still strangers
- In the first phase it is the nurse's duty to build rapport with the patient, to gain their trust for a much more effective communication
- In the second phase, known as Identification, the nurse would've already known the patient's needs, therefore he or she must select application of assistance, and develop a nursing care plan.
- The third phase is the Exploitation phase, wherein the implementation of the nursing care plan or use of professional assistance for solving the patient's needs take place
- The last phase would be the Resolution phase, in this stage, the patient's needs would have been met.
- The last phase would also be the termination of the professional relationship between the nurse and the patient
