Storyboard Text

  • Northern Free States: Why did they oppose it?
  • Don't spread slavery! There's already and equal balance of slavery and non slavery!
  • Northern Free States:  Beliefs about Congressional Power?
  • North
  • Congress needs this power!
  • State governments need the power! They know what the states need!
  • South
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the Compromise?
  • We are abolitionists! Slavery can't spread here!
  • At the time before the compromise, there was a balance between slave states and non slave states. If Missouri were to be voted into statehood, the balance would be disturbed.  Northerners were also abolitionists so they didn't want slavery spreading.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they support it?
  • Northern states agreed that Congress had the power to decide the fate of slavery in new states while the Southerners disagreed.
  • Southern Slave States: Beliefs about states' rights
  • States deserve the right to vote if they want to be a slave state!
  • Northerners were worried that slavery would spread into the North and West and it would upset the balance between non slave states and slave states.
  • Southern Slave States: Fears about the compromise?
  • Oh no!
  • They supported the Compromise because they realized that they would be gaining more slave states and they would gain more states under the 36-30 line than the Northern states above the line.
  • Yes! More slavery!
  • We should have the compromise! In the end we'll have more land.
  • Southern states believed that states should have the right of popular sovereignty meaning they could vote if they wanted to be a slave state or a free state.
  • The Southern slave states feared that the compromise could get rid of slavery itself.
  • This compromise could get rid of slavery!
