Charlemagne's army is fighting the Saracens in Spain. They have been there for seven years, and the last citystanding is Saragossa, held by the Muslim KingMarsile. Threatened by the might of Charlemagne's army of Franks, Marsile seeks ill-advice from his wise man, Blancandrin, who councils him to conciliate the Emperor and promisefor Marsile's conversion to Christianity if theFranks will go back to France.
Charlemagne and his men,tired of fighting, accept his peace offer and select an envoy to Marsile'scourt. Roland, nominated his stepfather Ganelon as messenger. Ganelon, who fears to be murderedby the enemy but girded by a sword and accuses Roland of intending this, takesrevenge by informing the Saracens of a way to ambush the rear guard of Charlemagne'sarmy, led by Roland, as the Franks re-enter France through the mountain passes.
Traitors must Die
The Saracens treacherouslyattacked them at Roncesvalles. Oliver pleads with Roland to blow his horn to call forhelp, but Roland told that blowing his horn would be an act of cowardice. IfRoland continues to refuse, Oliver will not let Roland see his sister againwhom Roland was betrothed to. Archbishop Turpin intervenes and tells them that itis an agony for them and so instructs Roland to blow his horn olifant to call for help.
