Scout begins by explaining her family history. She then goes onto explain how they met Dill and about the Radley place and how when Arthur Radley was a child he got into trouble, was locked up by his parents and not seen since.
Chapter 4

Scout starts school. The reader is introduced to the poor Cunnighams. Scout is whipped for trying to explain Walter Cunningham's situation to Miss Caroline Fisher who was already annoyed by her literacy. She doesn't like school.
Chapter 5
Important Quote: “What Mr. Radley did might seem peculiar to us, but it did not seem peculiar to him.”
Jem invites Walter Cunnigham to lunch. When they go back to school, there is commotion because a boy called Burris Ewell had a "cootie" in his hair. He goes home. Atticus explains about the Ewells and how they live.
The first school year has gone by. Scout finds chewing gum in the knot hole in the oak tree by the Radley Place. The next day Scout and Jem find more chewing gum and then two pennies. Dill comes back for the summer and they play "Boo Radley"
Scout is spending more time with Miss Maudie Atkinson, their neighbour. She then goes back to Jem and Dill to find that they are planning to put a letter through a window at the Radley place. They are caught and told off by Atticus.
