The purpose og this study was to see if hospitals whether they could tell the difference between pseudopatients (sane people) and real patients (insane).
ARE WE SANE? OR INSANE?
Rosenhan told the staff at a large hospital who had heard of Rosenhans first study that there will be on eone more pseudopatient trying to gain admittance into psychiatric hospital. None were actually sent. However 41 real patients were discharged as they were judged to be pseudopatients.
Can you tell the difference between genuine patients and pseudopatients?
Yes, I can!
193 genuine patients who attended for psychiatric treatments, 41 were judged to be pseudopatients. This result showed Rosenhan that psychiatric diagnosis is extremely inaccurate and that and that his second aim was in fact correct.
