“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.” - Albert Einstein
He emphasizes the fear the Harry felt when his family was turning into martains.
Theme Statement:Your location/environment can change your identity
It helped develop the theme by showing you that the Bittering family were on different planet making them change into martians and forgetting about humans.
“They looked at Martian hills that time had worn with a crushing pressure of years. They saw the old cities, lost in their meadows, lying like children’s delicate bones among the blowing leaves of grass.”
“Do you see? They’re different. They’ve changed! They’re not peach blossoms any more!”
Harry, Cora, Laura, Dan, and David (Bittering family)
When he saw his family turning into martins he started giving up and started forgetting his identity and turning into a martin.
Everyone's memories about Earth and being a human faded, and started turning into Martians. (Because they are on a different planet.)
It developed by showing that they would have to live there until the atom war ended and that would make things go wrong and to the end when everyone turns to martians.
“Alone, thought bittering. Only thousands of us here. No way back. No way. No way.”
Everyone that had lived in Mars turned into martians. After the atom war people came to rescue but only martians were there. Which made it a mystery.
I think the setting supports the theme because it shows the idea when you go somewhere that you don’t know much about you have to change to fit into the environment and that's what the people did and turning into martians.
