In 1903, Annie Johnson and her 2 sons and very little money. A torn apart marrige, and the burdensome fact that she was a negro.
Her husband William Johnson, left her and went to Oklahoma and left her with their kids with no money, food, or necesities. All they had was a little shack on a dirt road.
Annie decide that she would set out to find work, and leave her kids to someone elese's care during the hours she worked. She knew that if she went down to town to find work it would be a struggle so she decided to go to a factory. Kepping her plans in secret, she decided to go pick up some groceries.
Annie cooks meat pies, and sells them behind the cotton gin for a nickle each. On the workers lunch break, everyone would crowd around and buy whatever they could get.
Pretty soon her stand turned into a shop where everyone could buy needs and wants. She ended up making a living off of this.
Annie and her kids lived sufficiantly with money from her store.
