  • THINGS FALL APARTDESTINY AND CHI
  • Chi in Igbo culture is the personal spirit of a person; it is the spirit which determines destiny.
  • Destiny is the hidden power believed to control what will happen in the future. Destiny is fate.
  • Okonkwo is at odds with his chi throughout his life. No matter what he does to change the path of his life, he still seems to end up stuck in one way or another. His fate is inevitable; he will eventually end up like his father.
  • Evil fortune seemed to follow Unoka, Okonkwo's father, to his grave; dying in the Evil Forest, Unoka was never respected in his village. Like his father's, Okonkwo's misfortune is always lingering. Although it seems he has diverted from his fate, the tribulations leech onto him; giving him the same end as the person he despised. Okonkwo's chi led him to his inevitable end.
  • We believe that the dominant view of chi in "Things Fall Apart" is "a man could not rise beyond the destiny of his chi." Okonkwo tried to start his life anew, pursuing through his difficulties of inheriting no yams nor land; not having the start most men had. For a time, he was successful. However, his chi pulled him into his exile. Once he was accepted back into his father-land after seven years, he ended up losing his son, as well as being held captive by the white men and beaten. As his chi brought the misfortunes onto Okonkwo, he broke; his whole life had fallen apart.
  • Okonkwo's death provides the novel with the theme of destiny being inescapable. When Okonkwo hung himself, he had given in to the efforts his chi had taken to steer him onto the path that was intended for his being. Achebe wrote the ending to throw the audience off guard; readers realize that after all of Okonkwo's fighting, his chi had finally won.
